Dargaville was born in Cork, Ireland and was of Hugenot ancestry. He was baptised on 27 June 1837 and it is thought that he was born in the same year.[1]
He represented Auckland East on the Auckland Provincial Council from 1873 to 1876.[1]
He represented the Auckland West electorate from 1881 to 1887, when he retired.[2] He then stood unsuccessfully for Parliament three times.[1]
He founded the Northland town of Dargaville, which is named after him. He was a prominent businessman and timber merchant there.[1]
Dargaville was on a return visit from England when he died on board the ship Mariposa on 27 October 1896. He was buried at sea.[1]
