Joseph Dargaville

Joseph McMullen Dargaville (1837? – 1896) was a 19th century Member of Parliament from Auckland, New Zealand.

Early life

Dargaville was born in Cork, Ireland and was of Hugenot ancestry. He was baptised on 27 June 1837 and it is thought that he was born in the same year.[1]

Political career

He represented Auckland East on the Auckland Provincial Council from 1873 to 1876.[1]

He represented the Auckland West electorate from 1881 to 1887, when he retired.[2] He then stood unsuccessfully for Parliament three times.[1]

He founded the Northland town of Dargaville, which is named after him. He was a prominent businessman and timber merchant there.[1]

Death

Dargaville was on a return visit from England when he died on board the ship Mariposa on 27 October 1896. He was buried at sea.[1]
